23andMe Lowers Price of Personal DNA Test to $399

September 9, 2008

It sounds like 23andMe has exhausted all the early adopters. The company has lowered its price for personal DNA test by 60% from $999 to $399. Company founder, Anne Wojcicki, said the reason for the drop was to increase demand. I wonder if this is going to be an example of a company that was just a little ahead of its time. There’s just not enough value in the tests 23andMe offers, and the average doctor doesn’t know what to do with the data.

This model might make sense 10 years down the road when doctors are ready for it and whole genome sequencing is affordable. The question is, will 23andMe still be around?
