University of Houston Vies to be Tier 1

University of Houston

I’ve heard some people blame Houston’s lack of a biotech cluster on the fact that the University of Houston isn’t a tier 1 school like UT Austin and Texas A&M. I don’t think it’s fair to lay all the blame on UH when the TMC’s $1 billion research budget dwarfs that of UH.

Regardless, the state legislature is now considering promoting a few of the state’s non-flagship universities to tier 1 status. UH is in the running and has a pretty good chance to become a flagship school based on the size of its student body, its research budget, and its location in Houston. Let’s keep our fingers crossed.
